Success at Newcastle!

LJB and LBB roar at local festival.
Saturday 19th March saw our Beginner and Junior Bands make the short trip to Newcastle, Staffordshire to take part in the annual Festival of Music, Speech and Drama.
Both bands competed in the Under 14 section, where they have just 6 minutes to perform. The Juniors, off the dreaded number one draw, performed an arrangement of Uptown Funk, impressing the adjudicator with their presentation, choreography and their soloists. Meanwhile the Beginners, in complete contrast, drew last and managed to include three items in their allotted time; Fuego!, Hear Me Roar (featuring our newest and youngest members on Cornet, all playing without music!) and Ode to Joy. Their fantastic performance also found favour with the adjudicator who praised their professionalism, their smiles (the promise of an Easter Egg for the 'best smiler' might have helped!) and saved a special mention for our fabulous percussionist, Jack.
At the end of the section the results were announced as follows:
2nd place: Lions Beginner Band 85 points (First Class Certificate)
1st place: Lions Junior Band 86 points (First Class Certificate)
It doesn't get much better than that! The result meant the Juniors had qualified for the Grand Final later in the day.
However, they didn't have time to celebrate as they were also competing in the Under 19 section, performing Home Again and tutor Steve Barwick's arrangement of Scarborough Fair. Their performance again found favour and was rewarded with 2nd place, just being pipped at the post by Stafford Grammar. This was a result that was repeated in the final, as the Grammar School ensemble once again pipped the Juniors. Despite this it was a wonderfully successful day for both bands, who can now look forward to performing at the National Finals with great confidence. Well done everyone!
